Frequently Asked Questions

How do I apply for In-Home Supportive Services?

The first step is to call IHSS at (916) 874-9471. For additional information, please visit the IHSS website.

What is the difference between Provider Enrollment and the Caregiver Registry?

All people who provide care to an IHSS consumer must complete Provider Enrollment requirements in order to be paid for their services. The Caregiver Registry is a database of specially screened caregivers who are looking to work for IHSS consumers. Not all caregivers are part of the Registry. Caregivers who wish to be listed on the Registry must first apply by completing an application, submitting references, and attending a mandatory Registry Orientation, regardless of whether or not they are already enrolled as providers. Click here for more information on the Registry Application process.

When will I get my first timesheet?

Timesheets are mailed directly to providers about four to six weeks after the Recipient Designation of Provider form (SAS 426a) is received and processed. If you have a question about your timesheet, please contact the IHSS Payroll Department at (916) 874-9805.

How can I contact an IHSS social worker?

If you do not have a direct number for your IHSS social worker, you can call the main IHSS office at (916) 874-9471. The office is open Monday - Friday, 9am - 4pm. After selecting a language, press option 7 to be connected with a clerical staff member. You will be asked to provide the consumer's IHSS case number or Social Security number.
